A Case for Magic

Bereft of ideas and actually having some time to dedicate, I took my cue today from the NaPoWriMo Prompt for the day – – essentially, something magical, inspired by Percy Bysshe Shelley. While I had more time than usual, I didn’t have enough to change gears to epic poetry – – nonetheless I managed to eke out a sonnet in the rhyme pattern on Shelley’s Ozymandias. I will no doubt discover all my errors in stresses and syllable counts soon enough. But it was fun to write, all the same.

For all the wonders of this mortal plain,

And mysteries the realm reveals, the one

Appears from air so thin. Belief it strains

And burns forever, dreams it launches, some

Abandoned, tears and smoke all that remains.

Why do we seek for this elusive thing

None can define despite their best intent

Or captured whole by song or verse or ring.

Embraced by youth yet enigma to old,

But like the sun doth burn, we are content

To jump in blind in hopes we might could hold

Onto this wonder bright, despite it all.

For magic is this thing called love, we’re told,

It’s power inside ev’ryone it calls.
